Friday Favorites- 5 Summer Movies

Nothing says summer time like a Blockbuster movie!  I mean, flip flops, beach balls and margaritas say summer too, but hopping in the pick up truck and hitting the drive in on a hot summer night is just quintessential summer.

You won’t find my top 5 summer movies at the drive in anymore, but you CAN find them on Bluray, DVD, Netflix or even (insert gasp) VHS!!

So pop some popcorn, pour a glass of lemonade or iced tea, and get ready to be entertained!

1. What About Bob
I know I’m in the minority here, but I LOVE this movie!  It’s my go-to “get me in the mood for summer” comedy.  If you’re looking for something deep and meaningful, this isn’t the movie for you.  But if you’re looking for something light with lots of laughs, check it out!  Warning:  You will absolutely want to visit Lake Winnipesaukee, NH after seeing this movie!

2.  Vacation
Raise your hand if you wish there was a real Wally World you could go to this summer! This movie cracks me up every time (and I have seen this no less than 100 times).  If you’ve never seen this movie, you MUST.   Everyone needs a little Clark Griswold and cousin Eddie in their life!

3.  Stand By Me
Such a good movie that makes me feel all the feels.  And with the childhood versions of River Phoenix, Will Wheaton, Cory Feldman and Jerry O’Connell, how can you go wrong?!
Confession:  I had a crush on Cory Feldman back in the day.  I would just like to thank Tiger Beat magazine for all the great pin-ups you provided me with.  Even though my mom was really mad at all the tack holes I put in my wall, I was in heaven with my 365 degree view of Cory.

4.  Field of Dreams
Even if you don’t like baseball, you need to watch this movie.  The message is so much bigger than baseball.  It’s about love, family, and following your dreams.  “If you build it, he will come!”

5.  Independence Day
Because sometimes your summer needs a little Will Smith, hostile aliens, and the potential annihilation of the human race!

Honorable Mention:
The Burbs- Tom Hanks and creep neighbors.  Need I say more?
Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants–   Man, I really wanted to be Lena!
Dirty Dancing– Because, DUH!!

What are your all-time favorite summer movies??

Summer Reading List!

I’ve been slacking a bit on my reading this past month, but now that summer is here, I promise to be back on my reading game!  Today I wanted to share with you my summer reading list!

1. The Hypnotist’s Love Story
I’ll be honest, I wasn’t planning on reading this book.  I LOVE Liane Moriarty but this one didn’t really appeal to me.  However, since I’ve read every other one of her books, and I’m really craving some more Liane, I am going to give it a try.

2. The Couple Next Door
“May and Nico seem to have it all: a loving relationship, a wonderful home and their beautiful baby, Cora. But one night, when they are at a dinner party next door, their daughter goes missing…”

3. Secrets in Summer
“The queen of beach books” (The Star-Ledger) returns to the shores of Nantucket in a novel about one memorable summer when flirtations flourish, family dramas play out, and scandalous secrets surface.

4.  Everything We Left Behind
I cannot wait to get my hands on this book!!  The release date is July 4th, and I’ve had it pre-ordered since March.  This is the sequel to Everything We Keep which I LOVED!

5. My Name is Lucy Barton
This will be my first Elizabeth Strout book.  I wasn’t sure if I should start with this one or Oliver Kitteridge.  Who else has read Elizabeth Strout?  Am I in for a treat or should I scrap this from my list?

I can’t wait to check out what everyone else is reading!  Let me know what you think of my list…  any additions or deletions?

Happy reading!

Summer Bucket List

I’m still kind of in denial that it is already JUNE and in two and a half short weeks school will be over (yes Southern friends, the children in the north are still in school)!  So I figured it’s time to get my summer bucket list in order!

Pool time once a week:  We don’t have a pool.  This fact makes me very sad. But last year I discovered our town has a community pool.  It’s clean, quiet, and only $1 a day!  I will definitely be taking the kiddos (and myself) for a dip at least once a week this summer.

Beach vacation:  We’re headed back to Maine this year!  The NJ beaches we went to last year were definitely nice (and the water much warmer than we are used to!) but my heart is in Maine.

Farmer’s markets:  I love the fresh veggies and all the homemade cookies and breads at the Farmer’s market!

Camp out night:   I want to plan a special camping night in our backyard, complete with a tent, sleeping bags and a bonfire.

Dinner and drinks on the deck:  My husband and his dad built us a beautiful deck and I feel like we don’t use it enough.  This summer, I want to make sure we are out there having dinner (and drinks) at least a few times a week.

Date night with friends:   I’m thinking date night on the Captain JP (dinner and dancing cruise on the Mohawk River… lots of fun!).

Lake days:  We have so many state parks near us with gorgeous lakes to swim in.  This summer, I want to make sure we do a few days at the lake.  Swimming, relaxing, playing on the playground and BBQing!

Fireworks:  4th of July fireworks are a must!

Amusement Park:  We have a great amusement park only 45 minutes from us (The Great Escape) and believe it or not, I have NEVER taken the kids.  This summer they are going!

Read 5 new books:  I’ve slowed down on reading, and I need to pick things back up!  I’ve got a few books in mind, one being The Couple Next Door.  Any other must-reads you can suggest for me??

Drive In Movie:  Nothing more fun than the drive in on a Saturday night with friends!  We’re thinking maybe Cars 3 or Despicable Me 3… maybe both!

What’s on your summer bucket list?  I’m always looking for new ideas!

Friday Favorites on the new blog!

It’s my first Friday Favorites on the new blog!  Woo hoo!!  Are you as excited as I am?  I hope you will continue to stop by and visit me here at my new space!

Now, on to the favorites!

Number 1:  I’m making a real effort to take better care of my skin, specifically my face.  And that means using some big girl products!  I’ve recently started using 2 Peter Thomas Roth products, and I have to say, I am impressed.  After 2 weeks, I honestly feel like my skin is softer and more toned.  I don’t think I’ve really seen a reduction in wrinkles, but I’m hoping that will come with continued use.

Number 2:  Another new favorite product is this No7 day cream.   I literally just heard about this product line a few weeks ago.   Have I been living under a rock?  It moisturizes my skin without being too thick or heavy, and it has a pleasant, clean smell when you put it on.

Number 3:  I’ve been thinking about switching to a natural deodorant (vs an anti-perspirant) for a while now.  The thought of all that aluminum being swiped in my armpits day after day has really started to concern me.  I tried TOMS, but hated the way it smelled, and it also didn’t seem to do a very good job “containing the stink.”   A friend told me about Native deodorant so I decided to give it a try.   I’ve been using the Coconut Vanilla for about a week now and so far it’s been a success!   Stink contained!

Number 4:  I’m a sucker for a subscription box and I’ve found my new favorite! It’s called Our Southern Hearts and you can sign up right HERE.   The box is filled with fun products and treats made exclusively by Southern artisans.  I loved the May box (see below) and am already looking forward to my June box!

Number 5:   I purchased my first 2 pieces of Agnes and Dora this week (Frill Sleeve top and Muse top) and I’m already hooked.  Bye bye Lularoe, hello Agnes & Dora!

Thanks again for stopping by!  If you don’t want to miss a new post, be sure to subscribe to my blog!  Have a great weekend and I hope to see you back here on Monday!

Do you date night?

If you don’t, you should!
If there’s one thing I’ve learned in my 15 years of marriage, it’s that you need to make time for each other.  Set aside, scheduled, ALONE time, just you and your significant other.   You need time together, apart from your kids.  Time to reconnect and enjoy each other’s company.  Time to have fun as a couple.  Time to de-stress and relax.

I know we’re all busy, and tired, and pressed for time.  But when something is important, you make time to do it.  If you need to see the doctor, you make an appointment, re-arrange your schedule and go.   Your daughter has her first dance recital?  You find a way to be there.   You need to get your roots done? You absolutely make time for that!
Time alone having fun with your spouse (“aka date night”) is just as important!  Although arguably, getting those grays covered is a close second.

OK, so now that I’ve got you on board with date night, you might be asking yourself, “What should we do on date night?”  Well, guess what?  I’ve got a list all set for you!

1. The Traditional: You can’t go wrong with the traditional dinner and a movie!  If you want to spice it up a little, choose a restaurant you’ve never been to and then hit the drive-in theatre!
2. The Gamer: Have you ever been to Dave and Buster’s without your kids?  It’s actually really fun!  Go and get your game on, and grab some of those yummy apps while you’re there!
3. The Binger: This one is budget friendly and doesn’t even require you to leave your house.  Pick a show on Netflix or ON Demand to binge watch (Breaking Bad, Dexter, The Walking Dead, etc).    Grab a pizza and snuggle up together on the couch for the night!
4.  The Amusement: Amusement parks aren’t just for kids!  Hit your local amusement park to feel like a kid again (or a local fair or carnival).  Go on all the rides, eat some fried dough and maybe grab yourself some dippin dots!
5.  The Outdoorsman: Take a hike or nature walk to somewhere scenic and set up a picnic for the 2 of you.   So romantic!
6.  The Taster: Have a wine tasting party for just you and your man (or woman).  Pick up 3 wines you’ve never tried before, some chocolate and some cheese (what wine doesn’t pair well with chocolate and cheese?!), turn down the lights, light up the candles, and have a private wine tasting for 2!
7.  The Home Chef: Pick a new recipe and cook it together.  Then enjoy the fruits of your labor by candlelight!
8.  The Bonfire: When you think about bonfires, you might think of it as more of a group event.  But it’s just as nice when it’s just the 2 of you sitting around a fire, talking, drinking and/or listening to music.  Grab a dessert wine and cook up some Smores for an extra-special treat.
9. The Laker: Hit the lake (or whatever body of water is near you), take a swim, relax on the beach, and BBQ.
10. The Painter: Have you ever been to a Paint and Sip?  They’re not just for girls’ nights!  They’re for couples too!  Your man might be a little hesitant when he hears the painting part, but you just have to remind him about the SIPPING part!!
11.  The Golfer: Nothing beats mini golf and some ice cream on a hot summer night!
12. The Board Gamer: Pull Battleship out of the closet, wipe off the dust, have some Chinese delivered and Voila!  You have a date night!   Operation is a fun date night game too!

Now, I know some of you are saying, “But Kim, I don’t have a babysitter!”  or “It will cost me more to hire a babysitter than the date itself!”  Friends, I feel you!  I promise!  Our closest family member is over an hour away and hiring a babysitter for 2 kids can break the bank.  Not to mention I don’t trust just anyone to watch my kids.

My parents do typically take the kids for 1 overnight a month, which gives us some alone time and the kids some quality time with their grandparents (win-win).  But even if you don’t have someone who can watch the kids, or you just can’t afford it, you can still have a date night!  Put the kids to bed a little early, and fire up date #3, 6, 7, 8 or 12!   Say YES to date night!

What are some of your date night ideas?  Do you have a go-to date or do you like to switch it up?
